Westport Police say they arrested Elvin Mendez-Molina on Wednesday, Sept. 25 after he turned himself in at police headquarters.
According to police, Mendez-Molina was involved in a hit-and-run crash on Riverside Avenue on Friday, Sept. 6 around 5:40 p.m.
The victim told police that while she was stopped for traffic on Riverside Avenue, a vehicle attempted to pass her on the right side and hit her vehicle in the process, causing damage.
After the crash, police say Mendez-Molina drove away from the scene. The victim was able to obtain a registration plate and description for the vehicle, and surveillance footage from a local business also corroborated the victim’s account, police say.
Police say they subsequently located Mendez-Molina’s vehicle, which had sustained damage consistent with the reported crash. Mendez-Molina allegedly denied being involved in the crash, and a warrant was issued for his arrest.
When turning himself in, police say Mendez-Molina confessed to being involved in the incident. He was charged with evading responsibility, failure to drive in the proper lane and interfering with an officer.
Mendez-Molina was released on a written promise to appear and is scheduled to be arraigned at Norwalk Superior Court on Monday, Oct. 7.
